Mamphela Ramphele and the DA Part Ways Five Days into Presidential Candidate Agreement

Conversations with My Sons and DaughtersA Passion for FreedomFive days into Agang SA leader Mamphela Ramphele’s agreement to run as the DA’s presidential candidate, the deal fell apart, with the DA releasing a strongly-worded statement yesterday concluding that, “Dr Ramphele has demonstrated – once and for all – that she cannot be trusted to see any project through to its conclusion.”

The DA’s announcement came after a meeting yesterday in which the details of the agreement were to be finalised: “Ramphele reneged on the agreement that she stand as the DA’s Presidential Candidate, and that Agang SA’s branches, members and volunteers be incorporated into the DA.” The DA also states that it was Ramphele who pushed for the announcement to be made last Monday.

Read the DA’s statement:

The Democratic Alliance leadership team today met with Dr Ramphele to finalise the terms of our agreement that she stand as the DA’s Presidential Candidate. This was to be the formalisation of the public announcement made on Tuesday last week.

At the meeting, Dr Ramphele reneged on the agreement that she stand as the DA’s Presidential Candidate, and that Agang SA’s branches, members and volunteers be incorporated into the DA. This about-turn will come as a disappointment to the many South Africans who were inspired by what could have been a historic partnership.

The urge to subtweet about the development proved to be too strong for the two leaders to resist:

Both the DA and Agang SA, who has yet to release a statement, held press conferences this morning:
