The 2014 Media24 Books Literary Awards and Jan Rabie Rapport Prize Shortlists

Alert! The shortlists for the 2014 Media24 Books Literary Awards – including the new Elisabeth Eybers Prize for Afrikaans or English Poetry – and the Jan Rabie Rapport Prize have been announced.

Previously, poetry collections had to compete with prose and dramas for the Media24 Books’ WA Hofmeyr Prize and Herman Charles Bosman Prize, but this year the Elisabeth Eybers Prize will be presented for the first time. Nathan Trantraal (Chockers en survivors), Wilma Stockenstrom (Hierdie mens) and Marlene van Niekerk (Kaar) are on the shortlist for this new prize. Van Niekerk recently won the prestigious Hertzog Prize for her latest poetry collection.

The Media24 Books Literary Awards recognise work from publishers that fall under the domain of Media24, including NB and Jonathan Ball. The shortlist for the Jan Rabie Rapport Prize is, however, open to all publishers and recognises outstanding debut or early Afrikaans prose.

This year’s contenders for the Jan Rabie Rapport Prize are Carié Maas (Koljander), Rudie van Rensburg (Slagyster), and Dominique Botha (Valsrivier). Botha was recently awarded the Eugene Marais Prize for Valsrivier.

We are also delighted to see Books LIVE members Rachel Zadok, Novuyo Rosa Tshuma, Margie Orford, SA Partridge and Eben Venter on the Media24 Books Literary Awards shortlists.

The winner in each category receives R35 000. The writer and illustrator that wins the MER Prize for Illustrated Children’s Books share the prize money.

And well done to Sally Partridge (also a stalwart BooksLive member!) for what seems like her umpteenth MER nomination, for Sharp Edges this time.
