Lambda Award for Queer Africa: New and Collected Fiction

Queer AfricaQueer Africa: New and Collected Fiction, edited by Makhosazana Xaba and Karen Martin, was awarded the LGBT Anthology (Fiction) Award at the 26th annual Lambda Literary Awards yesterday.

The Lammies, as they are known, honour the best lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender books in the last year, with the prizes sponsored by the Lambda Literary Foundation.

Queer Africa was published by MaThoko’s Books, an imprint of GALA: Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action, in association with Modjaji Books, that publishes high-quality books on queer subjects.

Alison Bechdel, author of the famous feminist comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For and graphic memoirs Fun Home and Are You My Mother? and the woman behind the Bechdel Test, was presented with the Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Literature.

Cartoonist Justin Hall, award-winning creator of the series True Travel Tales in presenting the Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Literature to Alison Bechdel said that her body of work from her comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For to graphic memoirs Fun Home and Are You My Mother? solidify her unique place in the comic book cannon. Bechdel gave a funny and moving acceptance speech filled with memories from when she won her first Lammy in 1991.
