The Shining GirlsAlert! Lauren BeukesThe Shining Girls has won the Strand Magazine Critics Award for Best Novel.

“I’m stunned. Like being hit with the taser of happiness” Beukes says. “It was a hell of a shortlist, so it means a lot. Also: holy shit.”

The Shining Girls was chosen from a shortlist of six titles, including William Boyd’s Solo, Thomas H Cook’s Sandrine’s Case, Craig Johnson’s A Serpent’s Tooth, Stuart Neville’s Ratlines and The Double by George Pelecanos.

This is the fourth award the book has won, following the Exclusive Books Book of the Year: Reader’s Choice Award, RT Book Awards Best Suspense Thriller and the 2013/2014 University of Johannesburg Prizes for South African Writing in English. It is also up for a British Fantasy Award, to be announced in September.
