Andre Brink Wins 2014 ACT Lifetime Achievement Award for Literature

17th Annual ACT Awards

The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) has named André P Brink as the winner of the 2014 ACT Lifetime Achievement Award for Literature.

Brink’s award was announced at the annual ACT Lifetime Achievement Awards and ImpACT Awards ceremony in Johannesburg.

Five Lifetime Achievement Awards were awarded this year: To Brink for Literature, Sam Nzima for Visual Art, Richard Cock for Music, Richard Loring for Theatre and Mandie van der Spuy for Arts Advocacy. Each Lifetime Achievement Award winner receives a cash prize of R30 000.

Brink’s Kennis van die Aand was the first Afrikaans book to be banned by apartheid censors in 1973. His most recent novel is Philida, which was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2012.

Rise and Fall of ApartheidNzima’s photographs are featured in Rise and Fall of Apartheid: Photography and the Bureaucracy of Everyday Life edited by Okwui Enwezor and Rory Bester.

The inaugural ACT Lifetime Achievement Award for Literature was won by Nadine Gordimer in 2012, with Elsa Joubert winning last year’s award.

The 2014 ACT ImpACT Award for Visual Art went to Bevan de Wet; Jade Bowers was awarded the ImpACT Award for Theatre.

The ACT Awards ceremony was sponsored by Nedbank Arts Affinity, and the award is presented in association with the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation (DALRO) and Media24 Books.
