Alfred Schaffer Wins the 2014 Awater Poetry Prize for Mens dier ding

Alfred Schaffer

Mens dier dingAlert! Cape Town-based Dutch poet Alfred Schaffer has won the 2014 Awater Poetry Prize for his latest anthology, Mens dier ding.

Schaffer’s latest publication was selected by a panel of 29 “professional readers” (poets, critics and editors), winning by a remarkable margin, according to Poëziecentrum who announced the news earlier today.

This is the seventh annual Awater Poetry Prize (Poëzieprijs). Previous winners include Mustafa Stitou, Anne Vegter and Tonnus Oosterhoff. Schaffer will officially receive his prize in Amsterdam during the 2014 Week van de Poëzie, taking place from 29 January to 4 February.

Schaffer is also nominated for the esteemed VSB Poetry prize, the highest honour for a Dutch poet. The winner will be announced later this year.

He is based in Cape Town and currently working as a lecturer at the Department of Afrikaans and Nederlands at the University of Stellenbosch.
