Highlights from the First Annual Indie Book Fair and the Launch of African Narratives

Indie Book Fair

The very first annual Indie Book Fair took place last weekend and independent authors and publishers came together to discuss issues and brainstorm ideas for the creation of a “new wave” in publishing.

The event took place on Friday and Saturday at the Sunnyside Park Hotel in Johannesburg and the programme was jam packed with panel discussions, debate and demonstrations. As Sarah Taylor, marketing manager for Matador Publishing in the UK, rightly observed, the participants at the fair were keen to share their knowledge and expertise to improve the self-publishing industry.

The fair was sponsored by the Department of Arts and Culture’s Mzansi Golden Economy. Porcupine Press organised the event and on Friday celebrated the launch of African Narratives, a section 21 not-for-profit organisation committed to the development and growth of grassroots literature in South Africa.

Books LIVE was on the ground and documented the activities over the two days. From discussions on how literature fosters social development to the role of women in publishing, the 2015 Indie Book Fair has something for everyone.
