Because I watched a film of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy between 5 and 7 a.m. on a plane recently and, in that semi-dream state in which only the brown and grey of the atmosphere bled in rather than the intricacies of the plot, I was so affected by Gary Oldman's portrayal of the amphibian spy George Smiley that I thought I'd try reading his story from the start.

Dear Louis, have always wanted to do the same since reading The Constant Gardener (my first Le Carre since Little Drummer Girl, which I was too green to appreciate). Can you give a list of Smiley novels in chronological order? I thought The Constant Gardener very fine, but was a bit disappointed by A Most Wanted Man.

This is what I got on Amazon, Helen. I hope it's true:
    1. Call for the Dead
    2. A Murder of Quality
    3. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
    4. The Looking Glass War
    5. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
    6. The Honourable Schoolboy
    7. Smiley's People
    8. The Secret Pilgrim
