@digestedread finds quelle horreur a third instalment of Chocolat can be: http://t.co/CpQZeSGX
Good morning All! I hope that you are warmly dressed on this clear-skyed winter day...in CAPE TOWN !
Just a few questions and perhaps a comment:
- How strong can we become as women writers in South Africa?
- What topics will sell our writing?
- How do women of colour (like myself) infiltrate the market?
I have self-published a poetry book in 2008, just finished two manuscripts (one was already returned with a "no" ) and I am awaiting feedback on the other...another "no?" Well in the meantime I have self-published the most recent one again (paid from my meagre pocket!) to reach my target group (mostly fathers and univ/college students, but I guess it is a good one for women too!). I hope to have it in my hands early this week. So if you want to bless your man, your father or your boyfriend or girlfriend at college with a good motivational book...(21 inspirational stories and motivational nuggets : self and work-related : 119 pages) contact me at mtaconnect@absamail.co.za or 0725295941.
Name of book: Guess what? You are what you think!" Author Madge du Preez. Selling for R100.
Have a wonderful leg-warming day!
Till later...
Madge
Madge, post a cover of your book -- that always catches the eye. Also, try contacting the Centre for the Book for their very handy pamphlet series for people like you? They have them in English and Afrikaans, I believe. Lots of food for thought in these, from how to edit your own work, to marketing it, esp in niche markets.
Hi there Madge, and congrats on getting your book out there.
Pop along to Gary Cummiskey's Dyehard Press blog - full of nuggets of wisdom for self-publishers.
http://dyehard-press.blogspot.com/
Colleen Higgs' s book, A rough guide to small-scale and self-publishing, which should also available from the Centre for the Book is another invaluable resource. Colleen's also recently published a directory of small publishers - the Small Publishers' Catalogue 2010: http://modjaji.book.co.za/blog http://lwb.book.co.za/blog
Another suggestion is to think about making your book into an e-book - have a look at Electric Book Works, a digital-publishing company which also offers great advice: http://electricbookworks.com/
Buoy yourself up by reading some self-publishing success stories! There's a good a-z of them in the Self-Publishing Hall of Fame Listings on this site: http://www.bookmarket.com/selfpublish-a.htm
Have fun, and sell many!
Morning all,
Firstly, all those interested in self-publishing in SA - do check out our new blog simply titled Self-publish South Africa:
http://selfpublishsouthafrica.wordpress.com/
It's in its early days, so the more ideas and comments, the better!
The idea is to build a resource of news, views, tips, and great links for anyone interested in self-publishing in South Africa. It's powered by Mousehand, but we'd like all self-publishing service providers and suppliers to join in - the goal is to be a thorough resource so that self-publishing authors know what they're in for, and how to maximise their success.
On Maire's link to successful self-published books, here's an interesting link to a (polite) cynic:
http://jimhines.livejournal.com/313073.html?thread=2728689#t2728689
He also makes some good points about the effort involved in successful self-publishing. Watch out for the rant at the bottom of his post though - a little less ... contained.
Cheers!
